How to Overcome Anxiety at the Dentist

Dental Care is an important part of self care. Everyone deserves a relaxing dental visit, and attention to their unique dental needs. Anxiety at the dentist doesn’t have to stop you from getting the dental care you deserve. Here are some ways that we can help you achieve a calming, peaceful visit in our office:
You’re in Control
Let the staff know your needs and what bothers you. During the appointment, don’t be afraid to communicate what you need in the moment. Let staff know when you need a break to take a breath, if you need more information about what will happen next, or how you need to relax, whether it is to listen to music, breathe deeply, or take a minute to yourself.
Information is Power
The dentist can give you an overview of each option you have and what will happen during your visit, to help you anticipate what happens next or plan your visit better.
You can ask any questions about your visit and what to expect. The dentist can discuss your options for anesthesia and your treatment choices.
If you’ve had experiences in the past that cause anxiety at the dentist, sharing them may help us plan a better visit for you.
Bring Some Comfort
Some items you can use to help relax through the visit may be items that you find calming, such as something soft to hold, or something squishy to squeeze. Another option is music or an audiobook to keep your mind busy. Newer selections may keep you interested and engaged, or more comforting familiar selections may keep you calm and comfortable. A friend or loved one coming with you to lend support can also be helpful. You can share your strategies and techniques with the staff to let them know what to expect and how to support you.
Anxiety at the dentist should be a thing of the past, and we are available to support you in finding peaceful and calming ways to overcome it!
