I’m Afraid of Going to the Dentist
Going to the dentist for a routine cleaning and checkup isn’t a scary thing to some people. However, to others, it can be terrifying. Calling and setting up the appointment alone can cause hyperventilation and sweats. Is it possible for someone who is this afraid to ever make it into a dental chair? What can someone who has teeth that require immediate care do to get past this fear?
There are several techniques for overcoming anxiety about going to the dentist. Mild sedatives can be used to calm a patient. Sedation can be given orally or by IV. The patient will remain calm but aware enough to answer questions should the dentist need information.
It’s always best to let your dentist know of any fear or anxiety you feel about your visit. If you are visiting a dentist for the first time, schedule a consultation first to discuss your anxiety. If the dentist is unwilling to talk to you about this, find another dentist. You should never feel intimidated and the best dentists will make you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Getting over this fear will take some time. Take it slow and take small steps first. Just making the appointment is a step. Going to the office is another. Little by little you will overcome your fear and realize that going to the dentist can actually be an enjoyable, or at least not terror-inducing, experience.
