The Top Three Ways of Sanitizing Your Toothbrush

Your toothbrush does a very dirty job. It is used to scrub food, plaque, and detritus from between your teeth. It’s no wonder, then, that many people want to sanitize their toothbrush. Keeping your toothbrush clean and free from germs not only increases its effectiveness, it can even aid in your overall health.
Here are three ways to keep your toothbrush clean and sanitized. Whichever method you choose, your mouth will thank you.
Simple Solutions for Cleanliness
To start out, you can use a nice rinse each day in order to help keep the germs at bay. Put a small cup of hydrogen peroxide next to the sink and drop your toothbrush in once you’re finished. Change out the peroxide each day when you brush—don’t worry, it’s cheap!
If peroxide isn’t your thing, you can actually use an antibacterial mouthwash for the same thing. Although it will be a little bit more expensive, it’s still not terribly bad, and your toothbrush will stay clean for your mouth.
Deep Cleaning Your Toothbrush
Occasionally, you’ll want to really get the toothbrush cleaned out. Putting it in the silverware rack of the dishwasher and running it through a cycle will get it clean for you. The soap will scrub away the ick, and the heat will help kill any germs that are lurking in the bristles.
Get a Toothbrush Sanitizer
If you don’t mind spending a few bucks, you can pick up a UV toothbrush sanitizer for a reasonable cost. These devices use ultraviolet rays, steam, and heat to really clean out the toothbrush. Of course, they cost more than the other options, but they will get the job done.
Remember a Clean Toothbrush is Only Part of the Solution
Keep in mind that regularly brushing your teeth is only a small part of the overall oral hygiene regimen. You need to be sure you floss every day—even the cleanest toothbrush can only clean where it hits, and it’s simply not possible for a toothbrush to get between teeth and under the gum line.
In addition, be sure you come see us for a regular professional cleaning and checkup. Here at Cooper Family Dentistry, we make your oral health our priority. We will make sure everything is clean, and we’ll closely inspect your mouth to identify trouble issues before they can develop.
